i am laughing so much white girls thinking that other white girls always wear the bindi 24/7
LET’S TALK ABOUT THE BINDI FOR YOU FUCKING DUMBASSES
What it literally is is a piercing where the third eye chakra is said to be at. It represents the ‘third eye.’
It is not restricted whatsoever to religious affiliation anymore, although the Islamic Research Foundation would like to testify that it ‘signifies Hindu women’, but these are traditional uses of the bindi. If it was strictly traditional, it would have remained among Hindu women & not spread to the surrounding areas through slight cultural differences & outstanding religious differences.
People try to act like any time a culture diffuses it is solely the act of Westernized whites bringing it into some kind of capitalistic ploy. This is not the case with the bindi bc it got to our ‘trending market’ kind of late in the game - and that is long after the bindi was solely a religious significator.
But the problem is that people are trying to put some complex ownership on something hat happens to be a very simple invention. It is literally a piercing, on your third eye. And we know that it wasn’t the Hindus who came up for the concept of the third eye (although they significantly expanded our idea of what we call chakras). But the specific chakra that is the 3rd eye, we shouldn’t even have to get into it’s historical significance because everyone should know that it has been around in more cultures and religions than we can even name for thousands of years. I understand that the bindi had direct origins with specific Hindu beliefs, but that doesn’t change the fact that anyone over the course of history (especially isolated people in different places) could have easily decided to put a piercing on their third eye - for their OWN religious/spiritual reasons. People try to act like Hinduism owns the patent rights to the third eye. They absolutely do not! So if you’re going to do your bindi in a traditional style signifying you are a Hindu woman, you’re probably just ignorant and doing it wrong. But if you want to build off the massive amount of people who have turned the bindi into a non-religious concept anyways, feel free to decorate your third eye as you please, for your own spiritual purposes. Just know if it looks too much traditional bindis you’re still going to get called out on cultural appropriation from someone who also isn’t Hindu, via Tumblr
Thanks for derailing an entire cultural entity into an argument about Hinduism. The bindi (one of it’s many names) is a part of Desi culture not just Hinduism. Being part of a religion or spiritual sect is not an open pass for someone to appropriate Desi culture. I repeat culture not religion
A Desi woman
if u think my bindi is offensive please inbox me so we can discuss it. not gonna make it a public convoooo okay thx
Girl what the hell are you doing thinking a bindi is a fashion accessory for your tacky white ass…….
white people have too much time on their hands, that they have to dedicate a blog to complaining about not being able to appropriate another culture.
and this is how you be culturally insensitive.
Good for you at least you know your actions are racist.
